About the coffee and process
Most of the coffee from the Rwenzoris tend to be very low quality due to poor home processing practices. However, the poor quality has nothing to do with the potential of the coffee trees or the landscape. Located 25km southwest of Kasese, the Kisinga Washing Station which processes our Uganda coffees, was built in 2015 to explore the full potential of Rwenzori’s coffee and to support farmers in improving their yields, profits, and subsequently their living conditions.
Today, Kisinga Washing Station is improving quality by paying farmers more than double the price they would receive for the lower-quality coffees. And the proof is in the cup; Kisinga is winning awards for both its washed and natural processed coffees.
About the region: The Rwenzori Mountain Range (famously known as the “Mountains of the Moon”) stretches 120km along Western Uganda bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo. The magnificent snow-capped peaks and the glaciers produce many rivers. The high altitude, fertile soils, and plentiful rainfall provide perfect conditions for growing coffee. Here, coffee is grown under the shade of banana trees. Farmers also produce cassava, maize, beans, and groundnuts for local consumption and additional income. This creates a shade-grown product in balance with other crops sustaining the culture and environment.
